For daily wear, the simple rule is no more than 8 hours of shapewear at a time. Waist trainers can be worn longer (many women wear them 8 hours a day for waist training), and post-surgical fajas are designed for 24/7 wear during recovery, taken off only to clean. Comfort, not the clock, is the real signal.

If your shapewear starts to feel uncomfortable, it is time to take it off. That is true whether you have worn it for two hours or eight. Wearing shapewear for longer than recommended is not dangerous in itself, but discomfort is your body telling you to give it a break.
The right wear time depends on the type of garment, the compression level, and what your day looks like. This guide walks through each type, with the wear time we recommend at our New Jersey store where we have been fitting Colombian fajas in person since 2012.
The General Rule
For everyday shapewear and butt lifters, the simple rule is up to 8 hours. For waist trainers, 8 hours daily is a common waist-training routine. For post-surgical fajas during active recovery, 22 to 23 hours daily following your surgeon's protocol.
Colombiana Boutique fajas use a three-level compression system that helps clarify which garments are designed for longer wear: Smooth (light), Sculpt (medium), and Ultra-Sculpt (high). Higher compression generally means shorter comfortable wear times for most people, though Powernet construction makes Colombian fajas comfortable for far longer than thin nylon-spandex shapewear.
How Long Can You Wear Waist Trainers?
Waist trainers can be worn for 6 to 8 hours per day, and many women dedicated to waist training wear them at that level consistently. Waist trainers are adjustable, easy to put on, and easy to take off, so you can give yourself a break whenever you need one.
Unlike historical corsets, modern Colombian waist trainers are not dangerous when sized correctly. They are designed to compress and train your waistline over time, not to restrict your breathing or organs. The Powernet construction supports the lower back, encourages upright posture, and gives you the hourglass silhouette while worn.
Two of our most-recommended waist trainers:
- NS173 Semi-Vest Waist Trainer — Ultra-Sculpt latex-free, full back coverage for posture support
- NS006 Powernet Strapless Waist Trainer — Ultra-Sculpt latex-free, the strapless option for under any neckline
How Long Can You Wear Butt Lifters?
Butt lifters can be worn comfortably for up to 8 hours per day. They are designed for daily wear, smooth the lower belly, and lift and round the rear without padding.
Most of our customers wear a butt lifter all day, whether to a party, an event, or at the office. They are easy to wear under jeans and dresses, and they do not require any adjustment throughout the day. Take them off when you get home and they become uncomfortable, the same way you would with any other shapewear.
Two popular styles:
- NS001 High Waist Powernet Butt Lifter — Sculpt compression, mid-thigh length, smooth under jeans
- CB455 High-Rise Lift Shorts — Smooth (light) compression, the all-day comfortable option
How Long Can You Wear Body Shapers?
Body shapers are designed for 6 to 10 hours of comfortable wear. They cover multiple areas of the body (tummy, waist, thighs, rear) and apply medium to high compression, so the time at which they start to feel uncomfortable varies by person.
Full-coverage body shapers like the NS086 Full Body Sculpting Faja include a built-in bra and compression from bust to mid-thigh, making them ideal for under fitted dresses or as a daily-wear faja. The NS046 with the side zipper is also one of our best for daily wear because the closure system is faster to put on than a traditional hook front.
Two of our most-requested body shapers:
- NS046 Daily Use Compression Faja — Sculpt compression, side zipper closure, smooth under clothing
- CB198 Luxe Strapless Faja — Sculpt compression, the strapless option for low-back dresses and bridal wear
How Long Can You Wear Post-Surgical Fajas?
Post-surgical fajas are designed for 22 to 24 hours of daily wear during the acute recovery period, typically the first 1 to 6 weeks after surgery. You take them off only to bathe and to clean the garment.
Stage 1 fajas (worn during the first 1 to 14 days after surgery) and Stage 2 fajas (weeks 3 to 12) are built from medical-grade Powernet, are designed for around-the-clock wear, and feature open crotch designs so you can use the bathroom without removing the garment. Stage 3 fajas, worn from month 3 onward, can be worn as long as comfortable, similar to a daily-wear faja.
Always follow your surgeon's protocol. The wear times here are general guidance, not medical advice. For more detail, see our Stage 1 vs Stage 2 vs Stage 3 faja complete guide.
Two of our most-recommended post-surgical fajas:
- NS086 Full Body Sculpting Faja — Sculpt compression with built-in bra, the most-requested Stage 2 post-op style
- NS066 Sculpting Faja with Hooks — Sculpt compression, mid-thigh, the everyday post-recovery style

Can I Wear Shapewear at the Gym?
Yes, but with one practical caveat: plan to have a second waist trainer to switch into after your workout.
The 1026 Sports Latex Waist Trainer is the style most often worn during workouts. It is designed for cardio use and provides firm compression during the 1 to 2 hours of an active gym session. The latex outer layer is what makes it work well for cardio: it encourages localized sweating around the midsection, which is the appeal of working out in a waist trainer in the first place.
The practical reality is that you will sweat into it. Plan to take the worn waist trainer off after your workout, wash it according to the care instructions, and switch into a clean, dry one (or another non-latex daily-wear faja) for the rest of the day. Wearing the same sweaty garment all day is uncomfortable and can lead to skin irritation. Two waist trainers in rotation is the simple solution.

Is It Okay to Wear Shapewear Every Day?
Yes, as long as you are comfortable and your shapewear is the right size. Daily wear is what Colombian fajas are designed for. The Powernet fabric breathes, stretches with the body, and recovers its shape after each wear, which makes it suitable for long-term routine wear in a way that thin nylon shapewear is not.
If sizing feels off or you are unsure which compression level to pick, reach out by chat or email. We have been fitting fajas at our New Jersey stores since 2012, and the most common sizing mistake we see is sizing down for tighter compression. The actual answer is to choose a higher compression level (Sculpt or Ultra-Sculpt) in your correct size. Compression comes from the garment, not from squeezing into a smaller one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will wearing shapewear 24/7 permanently change my shape?
Not permanently. High compression garments and waist trainers help you look slimmer and more toned while worn, but the shape change does not stay after you take the garment off. Similar to working out, the visible effect is in real time, not permanent. The difference is that shapewear gives you the shape instantly, while training takes weeks of consistent effort.
Can I sleep in my shapewear?
For everyday shapewear, no. Your body needs unrestricted breathing and movement during sleep. For post-surgical fajas during active recovery, yes, you wear it through the night as part of the 22 to 24 hour daily protocol, following your surgeon's guidance.
Does Colombian shapewear last longer than other brands?
Yes. Colombian fajas are built from Powernet, a dense compression fabric that holds its compression through hundreds of wears and washes. Generic nylon-spandex shapewear typically loses compression within a few months of consistent use. The cost per wear works out lower for a Colombian faja despite the higher upfront price.
What if my shapewear starts to feel uncomfortable before 8 hours?
Take it off. Discomfort means either the size is wrong or the compression level is too high for that specific day. If a faja you have worn comfortably before suddenly feels too tight, it may be related to bloating, water retention, or the time of day (most people are slightly larger by evening). Always size up if you are between sizes, and choose a higher compression level rather than going down a size.
Can I wear shapewear during pregnancy?
No. Shapewear is not designed for pregnancy. After giving birth, however, postpartum fajas are designed specifically to support the body during recovery. Check with your doctor before starting any postpartum compression wear, and see our postpartum fajas collection for styles built for that stage.
